How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat, and arms beside you, palms down.
  2. Extend your legs upward over your hips.
  3. Curl your hips off the mat, bringing your legs overhead until they are roughly parallel to the floor.
  4. Roll your spine gradually back onto the mat, finishing with your pelvis down and legs above your hips.

Form cues

  • Keep weight across your shoulders, not neck.
  • Exhale as your hips roll upward.
  • Reach your heels away from you.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the legs overheadUse a smaller range that lets you lift your pelvis without kicking.
  • Forcing the toes to the floorLet your feet remain suspended rather than chasing floor contact.
  • Dropping the hips on the returnSlow the descent so your back meets the mat progressively rather than landing all at once.

Safety

Rolling too far can shift body weight onto your neck and strain it. Fatigue or limited spinal mobility can also make the overhead position and return difficult to control.

  • Keep your head centered; never turn it while your hips are raised.
  • Use a nonslip mat with clear space beyond your head.
  • End the set if you feel neck pressure, pain, tingling, or loss of control.

If you have neck or back problems, osteoporosis, or medical advice to avoid inversions, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting this exercise.
