Pilates
Pilates Seal
Pilates Seal is a seated rolling exercise with gentle foot claps that trains abdominal control, balance, and coordination while you maintain a rounded body shape.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Sit on your mat with your knees bent wide and the soles of your feet together.
- Grasp the outsides of your ankles with your arms threaded underneath your lower legs.
- Lift your feet into a balance just behind your sitting bones, with your spine rounded.
- Clap the soles of your feet together three times.
- Roll backward onto your shoulder blades.
- Clap your feet together three times at the back of the roll.
- Roll forward into your starting balance with your feet still lifted.
Form cues
- Keep your hips-to-heels distance steady
- Relax your shoulders
- Inhale as you roll back
- Exhale as you roll forward
Common mistakes
- Throwing your head forwardUse a smaller rolling range until you can return smoothly without jerking your head.
- Clapping too forcefullyTap your soles lightly with a small movement from your hips rather than pulling on your ankles.
- Rushing the balancePause until you are steady before starting the next repetition.
Safety
Rolling too far backward can place body weight on your neck. An uncontrolled roll or insufficient padding can put uncomfortable pressure on your spine.
- Use a padded, nonslip mat with clear space behind you.
- Keep your body weight off your head and neck.
- Practice the roll without foot claps before adding the full sequence.
- Stop the set if you feel spinal pain or lose control of the return.
If you have neck or back problems, osteoporosis, or difficulty balancing, choose a nonrolling exercise and ask a physiotherapist or doctor whether spinal rolling is appropriate.
