How to do it

  1. Sit upright on your mat with your legs comfortably crossed.
  2. Place your right palm on the mat beside your right hip.
  3. Raise your left arm overhead.
  4. Bend your torso to the right, reaching your left arm over your head.
  5. Return your torso to upright.
  6. Lower your left arm to your side.
  7. Repeat on the opposite side.

Form cues

  • Keep both sit bones heavy.
  • Reach long through your fingertips.
  • Exhale sideways; inhale as you return.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting instead of bending sidewaysKeep your chest facing forward throughout the movement.
  • Shrugging the raised shoulderLeave space between your shoulder and ear, bending your elbow if needed.
  • Rushing through the bendUse a slow, even pace so you control both the bend and the return.

Safety

Forcing the side bend can irritate your back or ribs, especially at the end of your available range. Reaching overhead may also aggravate a sensitive shoulder.

  • Start with a small range rather than trying to reach the floor.
  • Keep your supporting hand close enough to provide stable support.
  • Stop if you feel sharp pain, pinching, or tingling.

If sitting cross-legged or bending sideways causes discomfort, use a raised seat or ask a physiotherapist about a suitable alternative.
