Pommel Horse Leg Swing

The pommel horse leg swing is a supported, single-leg swing that trains shoulder stability, trunk control, and hip coordination while preparing you for scissors and cuts.

How to do it

  1. Grasp one pommel in each hand from the side of the horse.
  2. Lift into straight-arm support with your legs together on the near side of the horse.
  3. Shift your weight slightly toward the hand opposite your swinging leg.
  4. Swing that leg outward to the side from your hip.
  5. Guide the leg back beside your supporting leg.
  6. Center your weight over both hands to finish the repetition.

Form cues

  • Push tall through your shoulders.
  • Keep your knees long.
  • Keep your chest facing the horse.
  • Make the return quiet and controlled.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing swing heightUse a smaller arc that lets you maintain the same support height throughout.
  • Throwing the torso sidewaysUse only a small weight shift rather than leaning your whole upper body away from the swinging leg.
  • Releasing a hand too earlyKeep both hands on the pommels for this basic drill rather than attempting a hand transfer.

Safety

Losing your grip or collapsing through your shoulders can cause a fall onto the horse or floor. An uncontrolled return can strike the apparatus, while fatigue increases strain on your wrists and shoulders.

  • Check that the horse is stable, the pommels are secure, and landing mats cover the surrounding area.
  • Practice with qualified gymnastics supervision until your support, mount, and dismount are reliable.
  • Establish a steady, pain-free straight-arm support before adding leg movement.
  • End the set before your grip slips or your elbows begin to buckle.

If you have wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, or cannot sustain stable support, choose a standing leg swing and seek professional guidance before using the horse.
