Reclining Hero Pose

Reclining Hero Pose is a reclined kneeling stretch for the fronts of your thighs and hips. It requires substantial knee bend and ankle mobility, so support under your torso can help you control the depth.

  • Intermediate
  • Moderate injury risk
  • No rest timer

How to do it

  1. Kneel with your knees about hip-width apart, feet slightly wider than your hips, and the tops of your feet resting down.
  2. Lower your hips between your heels onto the mat or a block.
  3. Place your hands on the floor behind your hips.
  4. Lower your torso backward through your forearms onto a bolster or the floor.
  5. Hold the reclined position with your knees pointing forward.
  6. Press through your forearms and hands to return your torso upright.
  7. Shift onto your hands and knees.
  8. Straighten each leg behind you in turn to release the position.

Form cues

  • Breathe slowly into your side ribs.
  • Keep your jaw and shoulders relaxed.
  • Let your neck follow your spine.

Common mistakes

  • Knees spreading as you reclineReduce your reclining depth until your thighs stay aligned without effort.
  • Collapsing into your lower backGently lengthen your tailbone toward your knees to keep the backbend from concentrating at your waist.
  • Feet turning outwardPoint your toes straight back rather than letting your feet splay to the sides.

Safety

Deep knee bending can strain your knees if you force the position. Reclining beyond your available mobility can also cause ankle discomfort or pinching in your lower back.

  • Practice upright Hero Pose comfortably before attempting to recline.
  • Use stable support that carries your torso and head without tipping or sliding.
  • Place a folded blanket beneath your ankles if contact with the floor is uncomfortable.
  • Leave the pose if you feel joint pain, tingling, or numbness; do not push your knees toward the floor.

If you have a knee or ankle injury, recent surgery, or persistent back pain, ask a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting this pose.
