Reformer Down Stretch
Reformer Down Stretch is a kneeling Pilates exercise that moves the carriage beneath a gently arched body. It trains trunk control, hip support, and shoulder stability.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Kneel on the carriage facing the footbar, with your feet braced against the shoulder rests.
- Place your hands shoulder-width apart on the footbar with your arms straight.
- Bring your hips forward of your knees into a long diagonal from knees through shoulders.
- Lift your breastbone into a gentle upper-back arch.
- Press the carriage away from the footbar while maintaining your body's shape.
- Draw the carriage back toward the stopper, leading upward with your chest.
Form cues
- Keep your glutes gently engaged.
- Let your neck follow your spine.
- Inhale out; exhale to return.
Common mistakes
- Collapsing into the lower backGently tighten your abdomen to support your lower ribs rather than increasing the backbend.
- Sitting back during the returnKeep your hips forward as the carriage comes in instead of folding at your waist.
- Letting the springs snap you homeResist the spring pull so the carriage returns smoothly without hitting the stopper.
Safety
Excessive back extension can strain your lower back. An unstable carriage or fatigue can also overload your wrists and shoulders while they support your weight.
- Check that the footbar and shoulder rests are locked securely before starting.
- Use the spring setting recommended for down stretch on your reformer; lighter resistance is not necessarily easier.
- Limit carriage travel to a range you can control without joint pain or loss of support.
If kneeling, weight-bearing through your hands, or back extension causes pain, choose a supported alternative and seek advice from a physiotherapist before retrying.
