Reformer Footwork on Arches

Reformer Footwork on Arches is a lying leg press with your midfeet resting on the footbar. It trains your thighs and glutes while developing control of foot pressure and leg alignment.

  • Beginner
  • Compound
  • Low injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Lie on your back on the carriage with your head supported, shoulders against the rests, and arms beside you.
  2. Place your mid-arches over the footbar with your feet parallel and hip-width apart.
  3. Let your toes and heels curve gently around the bar.
  4. Press the carriage away until your legs are nearly straight.
  5. Bend your knees to bring the carriage back to its starting position.

Form cues

  • Keep your pelvis quiet.
  • Track knees over your middle toes.
  • Keep pressure even through both arches.
  • Exhale out; inhale back.

Common mistakes

  • Clenching your toesSoften your toes so your feet drape over the bar rather than gripping it tightly.
  • Snapping your knees straightFinish the press with a slight softness in your knees rather than forcing them backward.
  • Crashing the carriage homeSlow the final few inches of the return so the carriage meets the stopper quietly.

Safety

Excessive spring resistance can strain your knees or irritate your arches against the bar. An unsecured footbar or poorly controlled carriage can cause sudden movement and loss of foot contact.

  • Check that the footbar is locked and the springs are securely attached before lying down.
  • Use a spring setting recommended for beginner footwork on your reformer; fewer springs do not always make control easier.
  • Shorten the movement if your heels lift away from the bar or your lower back starts to arch.
  • Stop if footbar pressure causes sharp pain, tingling, or numbness.

If you have ongoing foot, knee, or back pain, ask a physiotherapist about a comfortable foot position and movement range before trying this version.
