Reformer Long Box Backstroke

Reformer Long Box Backstroke is a Pilates exercise that combines arm and leg circles while you balance in a curled position on a box. It trains abdominal control and coordination against spring resistance.

  • Intermediate
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Lie faceup along the long box, with your head toward the footbar and shoulders near the box’s footbar end.
  2. Hold the straps with your hands above your forehead, elbows bent.
  3. Draw your knees over your hips, with shins parallel to the carriage.
  4. Curl your head and upper shoulders off the box.
  5. Extend your arms and legs toward the ceiling.
  6. Open your arms and legs into a narrow V.
  7. Sweep your limbs outward and down into a forward reach, with hands beside your hips and legs together on a diagonal.
  8. Fold back into the starting curl, with knees over hips and hands above your forehead.

Form cues

  • Keep your pelvis quiet
  • Reach long through fingers and toes
  • Keep space between chin and chest
  • Exhale through the long reach

Common mistakes

  • Lowering the legs too farKeep the leg reach higher if your lower back starts to arch away from the box.
  • Shrugging against the strapsKeep your shoulders away from your ears as your arms circle.
  • Rushing the returnMatch your return speed to the spring pull so the carriage moves smoothly without snapping back.

Safety

An unsecured box or oversized circles can destabilize you on the moving carriage. Excessive resistance or fatigue can strain your neck or lower back as you maintain the curl.

  • Position the box lengthwise according to your reformer’s instructions, checking that it cannot slide or rock.
  • Check that straps and spring attachments are secure before getting into position.
  • Use a spring setting that lets you control the entire circle; heavier is not automatically better.
  • End the set if you lose your position on the box or cannot sustain the curl comfortably.

If you have neck or back pain, or cannot hold a comfortable curled position, choose a supported variation or ask a physiotherapist for guidance.
