How to do it
- Place the box across the carriage in your reformer’s designated short-box position.
- Sit facing the footbar with space on the box behind your pelvis.
- Slip both feet under the safety strap, hip-width apart, with your knees slightly bent.
- Cross your arms over your chest.
- Tuck your pelvis to round your lower back.
- Roll backward from your pelvis while maintaining a curved trunk.
- Curl your torso forward over your hips.
- Return to an upright seated position.
Form cues
- Keep gentle tension against the foot strap.
- Exhale as you roll back.
- Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
- Leave space between chin and chest.
Common mistakes
- Hinging backward with a straight backStart the rollback by tipping your pelvis backward rather than leaning from your hips as one rigid unit.
- Rolling too farUse a smaller range that lets you reverse direction without dropping backward or jerking forward.
- Throwing the arms to returnKeep your arms still so your trunk controls the return.
Safety
Rolling backward on an elevated box creates a fall risk if your feet escape the strap or the box shifts. Fatigue or an uncontrolled rollback can also strain your lower back.
- Use the manufacturer’s spring setting for short-box work so the carriage stays stationary.
- Check that the box sits securely and the safety strap is attached and undamaged before sitting.
- End the set if you cannot maintain secure foot contact or a smooth return.
If you have osteoporosis, a history of spinal fracture, or back pain aggravated by rounding, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting this exercise.
