How to do it

  1. Sit on the short box facing the footbar, with one foot anchored beneath the safety strap.
  2. Draw your other knee toward your chest with your hands behind the thigh.
  3. Straighten the raised knee as far as comfortable.
  4. Walk your hands toward the ankle of your raised leg.
  5. Roll your spine back toward the box, using small hand placements down your raised leg for support.
  6. Curl your torso upright, using small hand placements up your raised leg for support.
  7. Lower the raised foot to finish the repetition.

Form cues

  • Keep both sides of your waist long.
  • Soften your shoulders away from your ears.
  • Exhale through the hardest part.
  • Keep your hips facing forward.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the knee straightKeep a slight bend if straightening the leg pulls your pelvis out of position.
  • Yanking yourself upUse your abdominals to initiate the return rather than hauling your torso forward with your arms.
  • Dropping backwardShorten the rollback to a range you can reverse without momentum.

Safety

Losing the foot anchor or rolling beyond your control can cause a fall from the elevated box. Fatigue or forced range can also strain your back or the back of your thigh.

  • Check that the short box is stable and the safety strap is intact before sitting.
  • Use the reformer's recommended spring setup to keep the carriage stationary.
  • Keep your head above the box until you have learned the deeper version under qualified supervision.
  • End the set if your anchored foot slips or the carriage moves unexpectedly.

If you have back pain, a recent hamstring injury, or difficulty maintaining seated balance, get guidance from a physiotherapist before attempting the rollback.
