Reformer Short Box Twist
The Reformer Short Box Twist is a seated Pilates exercise that trains your abdominal muscles to rotate your torso while keeping your hips stable.
- Intermediate
- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Place the box crosswise on the carriage in the short-box position specified for your reformer.
- Sit on the box facing the footbar.
- Secure your feet under the foot strap with your knees slightly bent.
- Cross your arms over your chest.
- Rotate your rib cage to the right.
- Return to center.
- Rotate your rib cage to the left.
- Return to center to finish.
Form cues
- Grow tall through your crown.
- Exhale as you rotate.
- Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
Common mistakes
- Hips turning with the torsoKeep both sitting bones evenly weighted and your hips facing forward.
- Leaning instead of rotatingTurn around a vertical axis rather than tipping sideways or backward.
- Throwing the head into the twistLet your gaze follow your chest instead of turning your neck farther.
Safety
Forcing the twist can irritate your back or neck. An unstable box, loose foot strap, or moving carriage can cause you to lose your seated balance.
- Before mounting, confirm that the box and foot strap are secure and the springs hold the carriage still.
- Use a small, comfortable rotation range before gradually increasing it.
- Stop the set if you feel sharp pain or cannot control your return.
If you have back or neck pain, osteoporosis, or recent spinal surgery, ask a physiotherapist or doctor whether seated spinal rotation is appropriate.
