How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with your feet in the straps, knees bent, arms beside you, and head between the shoulder rests.
  2. Extend your legs to a raised diagonal with your heels together and toes slightly apart.
  3. Fold at your hips to bring your legs toward your torso as the carriage moves toward the stopper.
  4. Roll your pelvis upward onto your shoulder blades, bringing your feet overhead.
  5. Bend your knees toward the shoulder rests while keeping your heels together.
  6. Roll your spine back onto the carriage one section at a time, allowing your heels to move toward your seat as your pelvis settles.
  7. Extend your legs back to the starting diagonal.

Form cues

  • Keep light tension in the straps.
  • Exhale through the roll-down.
  • Keep your arms long, not rigid.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging into the rolloverUse a slow pelvic curl rather than throwing your legs overhead.
  • Dropping the back as one blockShorten the rollover range until you can lower your back gradually.
  • Arching at the starting diagonalKeep your legs higher if lowering them pulls your lower back away from the carriage.

Safety

Rolling too far can shift pressure from your shoulders onto your neck. Losing control of the carriage or straps during the inversion can strain your neck or back.

  • Set the headrest completely flat before starting.
  • Learn the movement under qualified in-person supervision with spring resistance selected for your reformer and ability.
  • Check that both foot straps are secure and the ropes are evenly adjusted.
  • Keep your head centered throughout; end the set if you feel neck pressure or cannot control the carriage.

If you have neck or back problems, osteoporosis, or restrictions on spinal bending or inversions, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting this exercise.
