- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Sit near the footbar end of the carriage with your knees bent.
- Place the balls of your feet on the footbar, with heels together and toes slightly apart.
- Reach both arms forward at shoulder height.
- Press the carriage away until your legs are nearly straight.
- Rotate your chest to the right, letting your right arm open behind you.
- Return to your forward-facing reach.
- Bend your knees to bring the carriage back to the starting position.
- Repeat the movement to the left.
Form cues
- Exhale into the turn.
- Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
- Maintain even pressure through both feet.
Common mistakes
- Pelvis turning with the chestKeep both hip bones facing the footbar as your ribs rotate.
- Collapsing into the lower backSit taller through your waist, moving slightly farther from the footbar if needed.
- Throwing the arm backwardLet your chest lead the turn rather than using your arm to force extra rotation.
- Rushing the carriage returnResist the springs as you bend your knees so the carriage closes quietly.
Safety
Losing foot contact or carriage control can make you slip from the unsupported seated position. Forcing the twist under spring resistance can strain your back, especially as you fatigue.
- Have a qualified Pilates instructor select spring resistance appropriate for this variation; lighter springs are not automatically easier.
- Check that the footbar is locked before placing your feet on it.
- Use a comfortable rotation range without bouncing or pushing into pain.
- End the set if your feet begin to slip or you cannot maintain your seated balance.
Choose a supported seated twist or seek advice from a physiotherapist first if you have back pain, hip or knee pain in deep bending, or difficulty balancing on the carriage.
