Resisted Sled Walk
The resisted sled walk is forward walking while towing a sled from a harness. It challenges your legs and trunk while building walking endurance against adjustable resistance.
- Beginner
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Fit the harness snugly at its intended waist or torso position.
- Attach the tow line to the harness attachment point with the sled behind you.
- Walk forward slowly until the tow line becomes taut.
- Continue walking forward at a steady pace for your chosen interval.
- Come to a gradual stop before reaching the end of the lane.
- Secure the sled against rolling using its designated stopping mechanism.
- Step toward the stationary sled to create slack in the tow line.
- Disconnect the tow line from your harness.
Form cues
- Brace your trunk gently.
- Keep your eyes ahead.
- Breathe steadily throughout.
Common mistakes
- Reaching too far forwardShorten your stride so each foot lands close beneath your body.
- Folding at the waistUse a slight whole-body lean from your ankles rather than rounding your back.
- Alternating surges and stallsReduce resistance until you can keep the sled moving smoothly without jerking the line.
Safety
Excessive resistance or sudden line tension can pull you off balance and strain your back or hips. A rolling sled can strike your legs when you slow down, especially on a slope.
- Inspect the harness, tow line, and attachment points before each session.
- Use a clear, level lane with a surface approved for the sled.
- Start at a low resistance setting and increase it gradually across sessions.
- End the interval if fatigue causes stumbling or loss of trunk control.
Choose unresisted walking or seek guidance from a physiotherapist if walking causes back, hip, knee, or ankle pain, or if you have balance difficulties.
