How to do it

  1. Step your right foot forward into a hip-width staggered stance, with your back foot turned outward about 45 degrees.
  2. Turn your pelvis toward the front of your mat.
  3. Hinge forward over your right leg with your torso long.
  4. Place your left hand on a block or the floor beside the inside of your right foot.
  5. Rotate your chest to the right, with your right hand resting on your hip.
  6. Hold this position for the chosen time.
  7. Unwind your chest to face the floor.
  8. Return to standing.

Form cues

  • Keep both feet firmly grounded.
  • Leave a little softness in your knees.
  • Breathe slowly into your ribs.
  • Reach your top arm up if steady.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding to reach the floorRaise your supporting hand on a taller block so your spine can stay long.
  • Forcing the twist through your hipsKeep your pelvis mostly facing forward while turning through your rib cage within a comfortable range.
  • Craning your neck upwardLook down or sideways rather than forcing your gaze toward the ceiling.

Safety

Forcing the forward fold or rotation can strain your hamstrings or irritate your lower back. A narrow stance or unstable hand support can cause you to lose balance.

  • Place any block on a firm, nonslip surface.
  • Practice beside a wall if you feel unsteady.
  • Stop if you feel sharp pain, tingling, or pinching rather than a mild stretch.

If you have ongoing back, hip, or balance problems, use a shallower supported version or ask a physiotherapist for guidance.
