Ring Swing

The Ring Swing is a controlled forward-and-backward swing from a straight-arm hang. It develops shoulder control, grip endurance, and coordinated movement through your trunk.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Grasp both rings with your thumbs wrapped around them.
  2. Hang with straight arms, joined legs, and your feet clear of the mat.
  3. Start a small forward swing by moving your legs slightly ahead of your torso.
  4. Let your legs sweep backward into a shallow arch through your shoulders and hips.
  5. Swing forward into a gently rounded body shape, with your feet slightly ahead of your torso.
  6. Reduce the swing over successive passes until you reach a motionless hang.
  7. Dismount onto the mat from the still hang.

Form cues

  • Keep the rings moving together
  • Make each direction change smooth
  • Breathe throughout the swing

Common mistakes

  • Pulling with bent elbowsKeep your elbows extended so the swing comes from coordinated body movement rather than a pull-up.
  • Kicking from the kneesMove your legs as one long unit instead of bending your knees to generate momentum.
  • Overarching the lower backMake the backward shape smaller so the movement is not concentrated in your lower back.

Safety

A slipping grip can cause a fall, especially as swing height increases. Abrupt catches at the bottom can strain your shoulders when fatigue or poor timing prevents you from controlling the motion.

  • Check that the anchors, straps, and ring grips are secure before each session.
  • Use continuous landing mats beneath the full swing path, with enough clearance from nearby equipment.
  • Learn the swing and dismount under qualified gymnastics supervision before practicing independently.
  • End the set before your grip weakens or you lose control of the swing.

If you have shoulder pain, a history of shoulder instability, or cannot comfortably support yourself in a hang, get physiotherapy advice before attempting swings.
