How to do it

  1. Sit upright with your legs extended together in front of you.
  2. Fold your torso forward from your hips to a comfortable depth.
  3. Rest your hands on your shins, ankles, or feet, wherever they reach easily.
  4. Hold the fold with your torso long.
  5. Raise your torso slowly to return to sitting upright.

Form cues

  • Let your shoulders soften
  • Breathe slowly throughout the hold
  • Keep your weight on your sitting bones

Common mistakes

  • Collapsing through the lower backSit on a folded blanket to help your pelvis tilt forward.
  • Locking your kneesBend your knees enough to ease excessive tension behind them.
  • Pulling yourself toward your feetUse your hands only for light support rather than pulling for extra depth.

Safety

Forcing the fold can strain the hamstrings or irritate the lower back, especially when you push beyond your available range.

  • Ease into the stretch without bouncing.
  • Stay at mild tension rather than pain.
  • Come out of the pose if you feel tingling, numbness, or shooting pain.

If you have an ongoing back problem or a recent hamstring injury, ask a physiotherapist or doctor about a suitable modification first.
