Mobility
Shin Box Switch
The Shin Box Switch is a seated mobility exercise that moves your hips between two 90/90 positions. It practices controlled inward and outward hip rotation.
- Beginner
- Low injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Sit with your knees bent and your feet flat, slightly wider than your hips.
- Place your hands on the floor behind you for support.
- Lower both knees to your right, placing your right leg in front of you with your left leg beside you.
- Adjust your feet so each knee forms roughly a right angle.
- Rotate both knees back through the center, allowing your feet to pivot.
- Lower both knees to your left into the mirrored position.
- Pause briefly in this position.
Form cues
- Keep your chest tall.
- Move smoothly, without momentum.
- Keep your hips heavy.
Common mistakes
- Forcing the knees downLet your knees hover if reaching the floor requires straining.
- Swinging the whole torsoUse your hands for enough support that your hips control the switch rather than a large trunk swing.
- Pinning the feet in placeLet your feet roll onto their edges as your legs turn instead of twisting through fixed feet.
Safety
Forcing the rotation beyond your available hip range can strain the hips or place twisting stress on the knees.
- Use a stable surface where your supporting hands will not slip.
- Start with small switches before exploring a larger range.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, hip pinching, or knee discomfort.
If you have an ongoing hip or knee injury or recent surgery, ask a physiotherapist or doctor whether this movement is appropriate.
