Side-Control-to-Mount Transition
The side-control-to-mount transition is a cooperative grappling drill that moves you from beside a partner into a straddling top position. It develops balance, body control, and positional coordination.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Start in side control with your chest across your partner’s upper torso, one knee beside their shoulder, the other beside their hip.
- Post your shoulder-side hand on the mat beyond their far shoulder.
- Slide your hip-side knee across their lower abdomen to the mat on their far side.
- Bring that foot across their hips until it is clear of their legs.
- Settle into mount with your hips centered over theirs, one knee on each side of their torso.
Form cues
- Move smoothly, without dropping your weight.
- Breathe steadily through the transition.
Common mistakes
- Sitting upright too earlyKeep your chest low until your crossing foot clears your partner’s legs.
- Pulling on the headUse contact across the upper torso for control rather than pulling or twisting your partner’s neck.
Safety
Concentrated knee pressure can hurt your partner’s ribs or abdomen. Turning while a foot or leg is trapped can strain either person’s knee or ankle.
- Use a clear, padded training area with enough room for both people.
- Practice with a cooperative partner at minimal resistance and agree on an immediate stop signal.
- Stop to free any caught limb rather than forcing the transition.
If either person has current neck, rib, abdominal, knee, or ankle pain, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before practicing this partnered drill.
