Single-Arm Kettlebell Swing

The single-arm kettlebell swing uses a powerful hip drive to swing a weight with one hand. It trains your glutes and hamstrings while challenging your grip and your ability to resist twisting.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet slightly wider than hip-width, with the kettlebell about a foot in front of you.
  2. Grip the handle with one hand from a hips-back position with your knees slightly bent.
  3. Hike the kettlebell backward high between your thighs.
  4. Drive your hips forward to stand tall, letting the kettlebell float to roughly chest height.
  5. Push your hips back as the kettlebell falls, guiding it between your thighs to complete the repetition.
  6. After the final backswing, guide the kettlebell forward onto the floor.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulders square
  • Keep your ribs over your pelvis
  • Exhale sharply with the hip drive
  • Keep your free arm clear

Common mistakes

  • Squatting the swingKeep your shins nearly vertical so your hips travel backward rather than straight down.
  • Lifting with your armLet your arm act like a relaxed tether rather than pulling the handle upward.
  • Bending forward too earlyWait until your upper arm comes back near your ribs before starting the next hip hinge.

Safety

The kettlebell's momentum can strain your lower back or shoulder if fatigue lets you twist or lose control. A slipping grip can send the weight into your legs or nearby people and objects.

  • Practice a controlled two-handed swing before attempting the single-arm version.
  • Start lighter than your usual two-handed swing weight.
  • Leave clear space around you, especially in front.
  • End the set before your grip weakens; change hands only with the kettlebell resting on the floor.

If you have current back, shoulder, or wrist pain, ask a physiotherapist or doctor before doing ballistic swings.
