Smith Machine Overhead Press
The Smith machine overhead press is a seated shoulder press with a guided bar. It trains your shoulders and triceps while the bench supports your back.

How to do it
- Position an upright bench so the bar travels just in front of your face.
- Sit against the backrest with your feet flat on the floor.
- Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width with your thumbs wrapped around it.
- Lift the bar clear of its hooks.
- Rotate the bar to disengage the hooks.
- Lower the bar toward your chin or upper chest, within your comfortable range.
- Press the bar overhead until your arms are straight.
- Lower the bar under control to the same bottom position.
Form cues
- Keep your ribs over your hips.
- Stack your wrists over your elbows.
- Exhale as you press.
Common mistakes
- Bench too far from the barAdjust the bench before loading so you can press without reaching forward or pulling your head away.
- Bouncing out of the bottomReverse direction smoothly rather than using a rebound to start the press.
- Forcing a deep lowering rangeStop the descent before your shoulders roll forward or feel pinched.
Safety
A failed overhead rep can trap you beneath the bar if the safety stops are too low. Heavy loads or a poorly matched fixed path can strain your shoulders or lower back.
- Set the safety stops just below your chosen bottom position, high enough to prevent the bar from trapping you.
- Test the full path and hook mechanism with the unloaded bar before adding weight.
- End the set while you can still control the bar without lifting your back off the pad.
- After your final rep, rotate the bar into both hooks and confirm it is supported before releasing your grip.
If you have shoulder pain or cannot comfortably raise your arms overhead, use a pain-free alternative and seek advice from a physiotherapist.
