Smith Machine Romanian Deadlift
The Smith Machine Romanian Deadlift is a hip-hinge exercise that trains your hamstrings and glutes as you lower and lift a bar along fixed rails.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 1 min 30 sec
How to do it
- Set the bar just below the height of your hands when standing tall.
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart, positioned so the bar is close to your thighs.
- Take an overhand grip just outside your legs.
- Rotate the bar to release the hooks.
- Soften your knees slightly.
- Lower the bar by pushing your hips backward until you feel a strong hamstring stretch without rounding your back.
- Bring your hips forward to return to standing.
- Rotate the bar into the rack hooks after your final repetition.
Form cues
- Brace your midsection before each rep
- Keep pressure through your whole foot
- Let your arms hang long
- Keep your ribs over your pelvis
Common mistakes
- Turning the hinge into a squatKeep your knee bend nearly unchanged throughout the repetition rather than dropping your hips toward the floor.
- Chasing a lower bar positionUse your available hip motion to set the depth, not a target height on your shins.
- Leaning backward at the topFinish upright rather than arching your lower back to lift the bar higher.
Safety
Excessive load or fatigue can strain your lower back or hamstrings if you lose control of the hinge. The fixed bar path can also pull you off balance if your stance does not fit the rails.
- Set the safety stops just below your intended bottom position.
- Test your stance with an unloaded bar, especially on angled rails.
- Increase weight only when you can lower the bar smoothly without jerking.
- Confirm both hooks are fully seated before releasing your grip.
If you have current lower-back or hamstring pain, use a lighter, shorter-range version or seek guidance from a physiotherapist before adding weight.
