How to do it

  1. Place a stable, load-rated wedge beneath the bar.
  2. Position yourself under the bar with it resting across your upper back, hands gripping either side.
  3. Place the balls of both feet on the wedge’s raised edge, with your heels unsupported.
  4. Rotate the bar to release its hooks.
  5. Lower your heels into a comfortable calf stretch.
  6. Raise your heels as high as you can without shifting your feet.
  7. Lower your heels slowly back to the starting stretch.
  8. Secure both bar hooks before stepping off the wedge.

Form cues

  • Keep knees straight but not locked.
  • Keep pressure through your big-toe bases.
  • Exhale as you rise.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing out of the bottomPause briefly at the bottom so each rise starts without a rebound.
  • Shrugging the bar upwardKeep your shoulders still so the lift comes from your ankles.
  • Forcing the heel dropLimit the descent to a range you can control without straining for extra depth.

Safety

Excessive weight or fatigue can strain your calves or Achilles tendons. A shifting wedge or slipping foot can leave you supporting the bar awkwardly across your back.

  • Set the safety stops just below the bar’s lowest position during your planned range.
  • Check that the wedge cannot slide or tip under your weight.
  • Test the movement with an unloaded bar to confirm you can reach and engage the hooks.
  • Add weight gradually, ending the set when ankle control begins to fade.

If you have Achilles, foot, ankle, or back pain, use an unloaded version if comfortable or seek advice from a physiotherapist before adding weight.
