Snatch Pull
The snatch pull is an explosive, wide-grip barbell lift from the floor without an overhead catch. It trains powerful leg and hip extension for the snatch.

How to do it
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart beneath the bar, with the bar over your midfoot.
- Take a wide overhand grip that places the bar at your hip crease when standing.
- Set your hips above your knees, with your back flat, chest lifted, and shoulders slightly ahead of the bar.
- Push through the floor to lift the bar to knee height.
- Guide the bar close along your thighs as your torso becomes more upright.
- Extend your hips, knees, and ankles forcefully as the bar reaches your upper thighs.
- Shrug your shoulders at full extension with your arms long.
- Return the bar to the platform under control by bending your hips and knees.
Form cues
- Brace before the bar leaves the floor
- Drive straight up, not backward
- Keep your neck in line with your spine
Common mistakes
- Hips shooting up firstRaise your hips and shoulders together until the bar passes your knees.
- Pulling with the armsThink of your hands as hooks rather than trying to curl the bar upward.
- Rising onto the toes too earlyKeep pressure through your whole foot until the final, explosive extension.
- Banging the bar forwardLet the bar brush your upper thighs rather than thrusting your hips into it.
Safety
Heavy loads and rapid acceleration can strain your lower back or hamstrings if your position breaks down. A swinging or uncontrolled descending bar can strike your knees or feet.
- Secure the plates with collars before lifting.
- Keep the platform clear of people and loose equipment.
- Practice with a light load before adding weight to explosive repetitions.
- End the set when fatigue changes your pulling position or prevents a controlled return.
If you have back, hip, or shoulder pain, use a lighter, slower variation and seek advice from a physiotherapist before explosive loading.
