Spinning Hook Kick

The spinning hook kick uses a turn followed by a heel-led sweeping kick. It trains leg power, hip control, balance, and rotational coordination.

How to do it

  1. Stand in a staggered fighting stance with your hands near your cheeks.
  2. Rotate toward your rear shoulder on the ball of your lead foot.
  3. Look over that shoulder to find your imagined target.
  4. Lift your rear knee across your body into a bent-leg kicking position.
  5. Extend your kicking leg just past the target line.
  6. Sweep your heel across the target line as your hips continue turning.
  7. Bend your kicking knee to draw your foot back.
  8. Place your kicking foot down in a balanced fighting stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your supporting knee soft
  • Pull your toes toward your shin
  • Keep your head level
  • Breathe out through the kick

Common mistakes

  • Planting the supporting footLet your supporting foot keep pivoting with your hips rather than twisting over a fixed knee.
  • Throwing your chest downwardUse only enough torso lean to make room for the kicking leg.
  • Spinning past your landingReduce the turning speed until you can finish without extra recovery steps.

Safety

Fast rotation can cause a fall or strain the supporting knee if the foot catches. An uncontrolled heel strike can seriously injure another person.

  • Clear enough space for the full kick arc and any recovery steps.
  • Practice low, slow air kicks on a level surface that allows your foot to pivot without slipping.
  • Get in-person instruction before adding bag or pad contact; do not practice this kick against an unprotected partner.
  • End the set when fatigue makes your balance or landing unreliable.

Choose a non-spinning version or seek advice from a physiotherapist or doctor first if you have dizziness, balance problems, or current hip, knee, or ankle pain.
