Standing Forward Fold
The Standing Forward Fold is a standing stretch that brings your torso toward your legs to stretch the backs of your thighs and gently lengthen your back.
- Beginner
- Low injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
- Fold forward from your hips, letting your torso lower toward your thighs.
- Rest your hands lightly on your shins, blocks, or the floor.
- Hold the fold at a comfortable depth for the prescribed time.
- Bend your knees further to prepare to rise.
- Lift your torso halfway toward standing.
- Return to standing slowly.
Form cues
- Breathe slowly and evenly.
- Let your head hang comfortably.
- Keep weight balanced across both feet.
Common mistakes
- Locking your kneesKeep a slight knee bend during the hold so you can fold without straining.
- Chasing the floorUse a higher hand support if reaching lower makes you force your back into a rounded position.
- Pulling yourself deeperLet gravity settle you into the stretch rather than tugging on your legs or feet.
Safety
Forcing the fold can strain your hamstrings or aggravate your lower back. Returning upright too quickly may cause dizziness or loss of balance.
- Stay within a mild stretch rather than pushing into pain.
- Avoid bouncing at the bottom.
- End the hold if you feel sharp pain, tingling, or dizziness.
- Place any supports on a stable, nonslip surface.
Choose a chair-supported version or seek guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor first if you have a current back or hamstring injury or recurrent dizziness when bending.
