Standing Split Pose
Standing Split Pose is a forward fold balanced on one foot with the other leg reaching upward behind you. It stretches the standing leg’s hamstrings while challenging balance and hip control.
- Intermediate
- Moderate injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Fold forward from your hips with your feet hip-width apart.
- Place your hands on the floor or stable blocks beneath your shoulders.
- Shift your weight onto one foot.
- Lift the other leg behind you toward the ceiling to a comfortable height.
- Hold the position with your hands supporting your balance.
- Lower your lifted foot beside your standing foot.
- Return to standing slowly with soft knees.
Form cues
- Keep your hips facing the floor.
- Spread pressure across your standing foot.
- Keep your standing knee slightly soft.
- Breathe steadily through the hold.
Common mistakes
- Chasing leg heightLower your raised leg until you can avoid arching your lower back.
- Pulling your chest toward your shinLet your torso hang naturally rather than using your arms to force a deeper fold.
- Craning your neckLook toward the floor near your standing foot so your neck follows the line of your spine.
Safety
Forcing the fold can strain the standing leg’s hamstrings, especially when you are cold or fatigued. Losing balance or tipping a support block can cause a fall.
- Warm up with gentle forward folds before attempting the hold.
- Use blocks on their widest stable faces on a nonslip surface.
- Practice beside a wall if your balance is uncertain.
- End the hold if you feel sharp pain, tingling, or increasing shakiness.
Choose a supported, shallower version or seek professional advice first if you have a current hamstring or lower-back injury, dizziness, or significant balance problems.
