How to do it

  1. Adjust the saddle so your knee stays slightly bent when the pedal is farthest from your hip.
  2. Position the handlebars within comfortable reach while seated.
  3. Place your feet on the pedals with the balls of your feet over the pedal axles.
  4. Begin pedaling at low resistance for a gentle warm-up.
  5. Continue pedaling at a steady pace for your planned duration.
  6. Gradually slow your pedaling to a complete stop.
  7. Release your feet from any pedal straps.
  8. Step off the bike.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed.
  • Guide your knees in line with toes.
  • Keep your hips centered on the saddle.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing in the saddleReduce your pedaling speed until you stay seated smoothly through each turn.
  • Grinding against excessive resistanceLower the resistance until you can turn the pedals evenly without straining.
  • Leaning heavily on the handlebarsSupport your torso with a light abdominal brace rather than resting your weight on your hands.

Safety

Poor bike fit or excessive resistance can irritate your knees or lower back during repeated pedaling. Moving pedals can catch your feet if you try to dismount before they stop.

  • Check that the saddle and handlebar adjustments are locked before starting.
  • Fasten pedal straps snugly, if provided, without pinching your feet.
  • Increase riding duration or resistance gradually rather than making large jumps in both.
  • Stop the session if you develop joint pain, dizziness, or chest discomfort.

If an upright riding position aggravates existing back, hip, or knee symptoms, try a recumbent bike or ask a physiotherapist about bike fit.
