Switch Knee Strike
The switch knee strike uses a quick stance change to turn your lead leg into the striking leg. It trains hip drive, trunk control, and coordination for kickboxing.

- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Stand in a staggered fighting stance with your hands beside your cheeks.
- Use a small hop to swap your feet, moving your original lead foot behind you.
- Settle your weight onto your new front foot.
- Drive your rear knee—the original lead knee—upward and forward with the striking leg folded.
- Draw the striking knee back toward your body.
- Lower the striking foot behind your supporting foot to finish in the switched stance.
Form cues
- Keep your chin tucked.
- Exhale sharply with the strike.
- Stay tall through your supporting hip.
- Keep your shoulders level.
Common mistakes
- Making an oversized switchKeep the foot exchange low and compact rather than jumping high or spreading your stance.
- Striking before the support foot landsEstablish a stable landing before driving the knee so the strike does not become an uncontrolled jump.
- Leaning far backwardReduce the knee height until you can strike without arching your lower back.
Safety
A rushed switch or awkward landing can twist your ankle or knee, especially as you tire. Forcefully driving the knee beyond your controlled range can strain your hip or lower back.
- Practice on a level, nonslip surface with clear space around you.
- Start slowly before increasing the speed or force of the strike.
- Keep this version non-contact; do not strike a partner or pull on anyone's neck.
- End the set if your landings become unstable.
Use a knee strike without the switch if hopping causes discomfort or balance problems; seek advice from a physiotherapist if pain persists.
