Tall Jerk

The tall jerk is a light-barbell drill that trains quick movement under the bar, split footwork, and overhead lockout without the usual leg drive of a jerk.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding the bar across your front shoulders with a full grip just outside shoulder width.
  2. Rise onto the balls of your feet with your knees straight.
  3. Push yourself under the bar into a split stance with your arms fully extended overhead.
  4. Steady the bar over your shoulders with your torso upright.
  5. Step your front foot halfway back toward your starting position.
  6. Step your rear foot halfway forward.
  7. Bring your front foot back to meet your rear foot.
  8. Lower the bar to your front shoulders under control.

Form cues

  • No dip before you split
  • Keep your ribs down
  • Back knee soft, heel lifted
  • Exhale after you stabilize

Common mistakes

  • Pressing before moving underBegin moving your feet as you push against the bar rather than pressing it overhead first.
  • Landing on a tightropeKeep lateral space between your feet in the split instead of placing them on one line.
  • Catching with bent elbowsUse a lighter bar so your elbows reach full extension as your feet land.

Safety

A missed overhead catch can drop the bar onto you or cause a fall. Excess load or fatigue can also strain your shoulders and wrists during the rapid lockout.

  • Practice with a dowel or training bar before using a standard barbell.
  • Secure plates with collars before each set.
  • Keep the platform clear and know how to release a missed bar away from your body.
  • End the set when foot placement or catch timing becomes inconsistent.

If you have shoulder or wrist pain, limited overhead mobility, or difficulty balancing in a split, get guidance from a physiotherapist before practicing loaded catches.
