Three-Part Yoga Breath
Three-Part Yoga Breath is a gentle breathing practice that builds awareness of movement through your belly, ribs, and upper chest during a smooth, comfortable breath.
- Beginner
- Low injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Sit comfortably with your back supported, or lie on your back with your knees bent.
- Begin a gentle inhale through your nose, allowing your belly to expand.
- Continue the same inhale, noticing your lower ribs widen.
- Finish the inhale with a small rise through your upper chest.
- Exhale smoothly through your nose, letting your chest, ribs, and belly settle.
- Repeat for your chosen duration.
- Return to your ordinary breathing rhythm to finish.
Form cues
- Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
- Let your jaw stay soft.
- Leave room for more air.
Common mistakes
- Pushing your belly outwardLet your belly move in response to the inhale rather than deliberately pushing it out.
- Taking three separate breathsTreat the three areas as points of attention within one continuous inhale, without pauses between them.
Safety
Breathing more deeply or quickly than you need can cause light-headedness or tingling from overbreathing.
- Stop the pattern if you feel dizzy, tingly, or short of breath; resume ordinary breathing.
- Use your natural breathing pace rather than trying to match a long count.
If focusing on your breath triggers panic or persistent breathlessness, choose ordinary breathing instead and ask your doctor for guidance.
