Toes-to-Bar

Toes-to-Bar uses a controlled hanging swing to bring both feet to a pull-up bar. It trains your abs and hip flexors while challenging grip strength and shoulder control.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Grasp the bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder width.
  2. Hang with straight elbows and your feet clear of the floor.
  3. Move into a small arch with your chest forward and feet slightly behind you.
  4. Sweep your feet forward into a hollow position, with your ribs tucked toward your pelvis.
  5. Lift both feet until your toes touch the bar together between your hands, curling your hips toward your ribs.
  6. Lower your legs into a small arch to complete the repetition.

Form cues

  • Press down on the bar
  • Keep your head neutral
  • Keep shoulders away from your ears
  • Exhale as your feet rise

Common mistakes

  • Swinging farther with every repPause between repetitions until you can repeat the same compact swing without building momentum.
  • Lifting only from the hipsRound your lower trunk as your legs rise rather than keeping your back arched.
  • Bending your elbows to reachKeep your arms long and reduce your leg height until you can lift without pulling yourself upward.

Safety

Losing your grip during the swing can cause a fall. Aggressive kipping or an uncontrolled descent can strain your shoulders or lower back, especially as you fatigue.

  • Use a firmly secured bar with enough clearance for your full swing and landing.
  • Build a comfortable active hang and controlled hanging knee raises before attempting the kipping version.
  • End the set when your grip starts slipping or you cannot control the descent.
  • Stop swinging before releasing the bar for a short, controlled landing.

If hanging or swinging causes shoulder or back pain, choose a pain-free nonhanging alternative and seek guidance from a physiotherapist before progressing.
