How to do it

  1. Sit facing the tower with your knees slightly bent and your feet supported against its base.
  2. Grasp the roll-down bar with your hands shoulder-width apart.
  3. Tilt your pelvis backward to round your lower back.
  4. Lower your spine toward the mat gradually, stopping at a depth you can control.
  5. Curl your torso forward toward your knees.
  6. Unroll your spine into an upright seated position.

Form cues

  • Keep the bar level.
  • Let your shoulders stay low.
  • Exhale during the backward roll.
  • Keep your heels connected to their support.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling with your armsKeep your elbows softly extended so your trunk drives the movement rather than an arm pull.
  • Leaning back as one rigid pieceThink of placing your lower, middle, and upper back down in sequence.
  • Spring-assisted snapping uprightResist the spring's pull enough to make the return as slow as the descent.

Safety

Losing your grip can let the spring-loaded bar recoil and strike you. Rolling farther than you can control may strain your back or neck, especially with fatigue.

  • Have a qualified Pilates instructor establish the spring attachment and tension for your tower before your first session.
  • Use the designated roll-down bar, not a push-through bar substituted into this setup.
  • Check that spring clips are closed and the bar, springs, and tower anchors are secure before starting.
  • End the set if your grip slips or you cannot control the bar's movement.

If you have back or neck pain, osteoporosis, or a history of spinal fracture, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before doing loaded spinal rounding.
