Tuck Back Lever

The tuck back lever is a straight-arm ring hold with your torso facing the floor and your knees tucked in. It develops chest and shoulder strength while challenging whole-body control.

How to do it

  1. Grasp the rings with your feet on the floor.
  2. Lift your knees toward your chest.
  3. Rotate backward into an inverted tuck, with your hips above your shoulders.
  4. Straighten your elbows.
  5. Lower your tucked body backward until your torso is parallel to the floor, facing down.
  6. Hold this position with your hips level with your shoulders and your knees close to your chest.
  7. Raise your hips back into the inverted tuck.
  8. Rotate forward out of the tuck until your feet return to the floor.

Form cues

  • Keep your neck long.
  • Squeeze the rings firmly.
  • Keep your upper back broad.

Common mistakes

  • Bending your elbows during the holdUse a shorter attempt that lets you maintain straight arms throughout.
  • Opening the tuck too soonKeep your thighs close to your abdomen rather than extending your legs to chase a harder position.
  • Swinging into positionPause in the inverted tuck before lowering slowly into the lever.

Safety

Dropping too far behind your shoulders can strain the front of the shoulder or the biceps tendon. Losing your grip while inverted can cause a head or neck injury.

  • Check the ring anchors and straps before use.
  • Set the rings over a padded, clear area with enough head clearance for the inversion.
  • Practice the entry and reverse exit with a capable spotter before attempting timed holds.
  • Exit before fatigue prevents a controlled return; do not drop into a deep shoulder stretch.

If you have shoulder, elbow, or biceps tendon pain, or cannot comfortably support yourself with your arms behind your torso, seek physiotherapist advice before attempting this hold.
