Turtle-to-Guard Recovery
Turtle-to-Guard Recovery is a partner drill that moves you from hands and knees into a seated guard, with your legs between you and your partner. It trains hip movement, trunk control, and defensive positioning.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Begin on your knees and forearms with a cooperative partner beside one hip.
- Plant the hand farthest from your partner beneath your shoulder.
- Shift your hips away from your partner to create room for your legs.
- Lower the hip nearest your partner onto the mat.
- Pivot on that hip until your chest faces your partner.
- Bring both knees between your bodies to finish in seated guard, with your shins facing your partner’s torso.
Form cues
- Keep your chin gently tucked
- Keep your elbows close
- Make the movement smooth, not explosive
Common mistakes
- Trying to thread a crowded kneeMove your hips farther away before bringing your knee through the gap.
- Swinging your legs wideKeep your knees bent so your legs travel through a compact path.
- Stopping with one leg outsideComplete the recovery with both legs between you and your partner before counting the rep.
Safety
Turning against a trapped arm can strain your wrist or shoulder. Partner pressure or an uncontrolled roll can load your neck, especially when fatigue makes you collapse forward.
- Use a clear, padded mat with enough room for both people to move.
- Agree on light resistance, a stop signal, and no locked chokes or joint locks before starting.
- Stop immediately if a limb becomes trapped or your weight shifts onto your head or neck.
- Have your partner release contact at the recovered guard position before resetting.
If you have neck, shoulder, wrist, or knee pain, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before practicing with partner pressure.
