Underwater Treadmill Run

The underwater treadmill run is running on a submerged moving belt. It trains cardiovascular endurance and leg stamina while water supports some of your weight and resists your movement.

  • Beginner
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Enter through the machine’s designated access point when the operator signals.
  2. Stand in the center of the stopped belt with your hands on the support rails.
  3. Walk as the operator starts the belt at a slow speed.
  4. Release the rails once your footing is steady.
  5. Transition to a sustainable run as the operator gradually increases the belt speed.
  6. Return to walking speed at the end of your interval.
  7. Exit through the designated access point after the belt stops completely and the operator gives clearance.

Form cues

  • Stay tall through your torso.
  • Land with your feet beneath your hips.
  • Let your arms swing naturally.
  • Keep your gaze forward.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling against the railsAsk for a lower speed if you need the rails to keep pace.
  • Forcing your usual land-running paceMatch your effort to the water resistance rather than your normal treadmill speed.
  • Drifting backward on the beltRequest a speed reduction before you lose your centered position.

Safety

Losing your footing on the moving belt can cause a fall or submersion. Excessive speed or water resistance can also cause fatigue that makes it difficult to stay upright.

  • Use the machine only with a trained operator present, following the facility’s access and emergency-stop procedures.
  • Have the operator confirm water depth and machine readiness before starting; leave speed, depth, and jet adjustments to them.
  • Report slipping, pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty, or equipment problems immediately so the operator can stop the session safely.

If you are recovering from an injury or have balance, heart, or breathing concerns, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before running in water.
