Underwater Treadmill Walk

The underwater treadmill walk is forward walking on a submerged moving belt. Water supports part of your body weight while adding resistance, training your legs and cardiovascular endurance.

  • Beginner
  • Low injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Enter the pool or treadmill chamber using the designated steps or lift.
  2. Stand near the center of the stationary belt, facing forward.
  3. Place your hands lightly on the support rails.
  4. Ask the operator to start the belt at a slow walking speed.
  5. Walk forward with comfortable, alternating steps for your planned duration.
  6. Ask the operator to stop the belt while you continue stepping until it stops.
  7. Exit using the designated steps or lift.

Form cues

  • Look ahead, not at your feet.
  • Keep your shoulders relaxed.
  • Let your arms swing when steady.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching too far forwardShorten your stride so each foot lands close to beneath your body.
  • Hanging on the railsReduce the belt speed until you can walk without supporting your weight through your arms.
  • Leaning into the water resistanceKeep your trunk upright rather than bending forward at your waist.

Safety

A moving belt and wet access surfaces can cause slips or loss of balance. Excessive speed or water resistance can make it difficult to keep your footing, especially as you tire.

  • Use the treadmill with trained facility staff present and agree on a clear stop signal.
  • Have staff select a suitable water depth, forward-walking belt direction, and initial jet setting before starting.
  • Increase speed or jet resistance one setting at a time.
  • End the bout if you repeatedly drift backward or struggle to place your feet.

If you have significant balance problems, difficulty safely entering water, or a heart or lung condition, get medical guidance before starting.
