Wall Pad Rear Uppercut

The wall pad rear uppercut is a short upward punch with your back hand into a fixed target. It trains coordinated leg drive, hip rotation, and arm movement for close-range boxing.

  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Stand close to the target in a staggered stance, with the foot on your punching side behind you.
  2. Raise your fists beside your cheeks.
  3. Bend your knees slightly.
  4. Lower your rear fist a few inches with your elbow close to your ribs.
  5. Turn your rear hip forward with a small pivot on your rear foot.
  6. Drive your rear fist upward into the pad’s angled underside, palm facing you, using a short push from your legs.
  7. Return your rear fist to your cheek.

Form cues

  • Keep your wrist straight.
  • Chin tucked, eyes on target.
  • Keep your lead hand guarding.
  • Exhale sharply with the punch.

Common mistakes

  • Winding up below the waistKeep the loading motion small enough that your fist stays near your torso.
  • Reaching for the targetAdjust your starting distance so you make contact with a bent elbow and your weight between your feet.
  • Scooping with only the armLet your legs and hip rotation start the punch rather than lifting your fist independently.

Safety

A fixed pad absorbs less movement than a hanging bag, so hard or misaligned contact can strain your wrist, elbow, or shoulder. A glancing punch can hit the wall or exposed mounting hardware.

  • Use a pad with a padded uppercut surface; do not punch upward along a flat wall pad.
  • Check that the anchors are secure and the padding has no exposed hardware or hard spots.
  • Wear properly fitted hand wraps and boxing training gloves.
  • Begin with light contact and end the set if fatigue makes your strikes inaccurate.

If you have hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, use a pain-free no-contact version and seek advice from a physiotherapist before returning to impact work.
