Wall Pad Straight Punch

The wall pad straight punch is a single direct strike into a fixed padded target. It trains your chest, shoulders, and arms while developing punching accuracy, distance control, and wrist alignment.

  • Beginner
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Stand facing the pad with your feet about shoulder-width apart, one foot forward, and your knees slightly bent.
  2. Raise your fists to cheek height.
  3. Step into range so your punch can reach the target with a slight bend remaining in your elbow.
  4. Deliver one straight punch into the pad through your first two knuckles, using a small hip and shoulder turn.
  5. Retract your fist directly to your cheek.
  6. Step back out of striking range.

Form cues

  • Keep your wrist straight behind your fist.
  • Keep your free hand at your cheek.
  • Exhale briefly on impact.
  • Stay loose until contact.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning toward the targetAdjust your distance with your feet rather than tipping your torso forward.
  • Flaring the punching elbowKeep your elbow tracking behind your fist instead of swinging it sideways.
  • Pushing into the padMake contact brief rather than leaving your weight pressed against the target.

Safety

A fixed wall pad gives less than a hanging bag, so hard or misaligned strikes can strain your knuckles, wrists, elbows, or shoulders. Poor distance control can also cause your elbow to lock at impact.

  • Check that the pad is securely mounted and has no exposed hardware, damaged padding, or hard spots.
  • Wear properly fitted hand wraps and padded boxing training gloves.
  • Begin with light contact; increase force only while your alignment and balance stay consistent.
  • Stop the set if you develop joint pain or fatigue changes your technique.

If you have a current hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder injury, use noncontact practice and seek guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before striking.
