How to do it

  1. Start on your hands and knees with your partner kneeling behind you, holding your waist lightly.
  2. Plant one foot forward beneath your hip.
  3. Lift your chest upright over your planted foot.
  4. Secure your partner’s waist-control wrist with both hands.
  5. Push through your planted foot to rise to standing.
  6. Press the controlled hand down away from your waist.
  7. Move your hips forward out of your partner’s hold.
  8. Turn to face your partner once your waist is clear.

Form cues

  • Keep your elbows close.
  • Look ahead, not down.
  • Breathe out as you rise.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing your feet togetherKeep your feet about shoulder-width apart, with one slightly forward for balance.
  • Pulling individual fingersUse a broad grip around the wrist or hand without bending individual fingers.
  • Leaning backward into your partnerKeep your weight over your own feet rather than relying on your partner for support.

Safety

Unexpected resistance can pull you off balance during the rise or turn, causing a fall. Twisting against a trapped hand can strain either partner’s wrist or shoulder.

  • Use a clean training mat with enough clear space for both partners.
  • Agree on light resistance and a stop signal before each set.
  • Exclude trips, lifts, and mat returns—the partner must not bring you back to the mat.
  • Release all grips after the escape before lowering yourself to your knees to reset.

If knee, wrist, or shoulder pain limits the starting position or hand control, get advice from a physiotherapist before practicing with a partner.
