Yoke Carry
The yoke carry is a loaded walk with a frame supported across your upper back. It trains trunk stability, upper-back strength, and your legs’ ability to move under load.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it
- Set the crossbar slightly below your standing shoulder height.
- Position yourself beneath the crossbar with it resting across your upper-back muscles.
- Grip the uprights at a comfortable height.
- Stand tall to lift the frame just clear of the ground.
- Walk forward with short, controlled steps for the planned time.
- Slow to a complete stop.
- Bend your knees to lower the frame until its base rests fully on the ground.
- Step out from beneath the crossbar.
Form cues
- Brace your middle before lifting.
- Take small breaths behind your brace.
- Keep your eyes forward.
Common mistakes
- Crossbar pressing on your neckReposition the crossbar lower onto the muscular shelf of your upper back before lifting.
- Frame swinging side to sideReduce your pace until the frame stays centered over your feet.
- Leaning far forwardReduce the load so you can keep your torso nearly upright throughout the carry.
Safety
Heavy loading across your upper back can strain your neck or back if your posture collapses. A swinging or tipping frame can strike you or crush a foot during an uncontrolled set-down.
- Check that crossbar pins are fully engaged, plates are evenly loaded, and collars secure the plates.
- Use a level, unobstructed lane with enough room to stop without turning.
- Practice the pickup and set-down with an empty or lightly loaded frame before adding weight.
- Keep other people outside the frame’s path and your feet clear of its ground-contact points.
If you have neck or back pain, balance problems, or a recent spinal injury, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting loaded yoke carries.
