Aquatic Resistance-Jet Run

The aquatic resistance-jet run is pool running against a controlled current, usually while staying in place. It trains cardiovascular endurance and the legs against water resistance.

  • Intermediate
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Stand facing the jet in waist- to chest-deep water where you can firmly plant your feet.
  2. Signal the operator to start the jet at its lowest flow.
  3. Begin running against the current with short, alternating steps, staying near your starting position.
  4. Swing each arm opposite the moving leg.
  5. Maintain your running rhythm for the timed interval.
  6. Slow to a march near the end of the interval.
  7. Take a stable wall hold while the operator turns off the jet.
  8. Step out of the running area.

Form cues

  • Keep your head over your hips.
  • Keep your shoulders relaxed.
  • Breathe steadily throughout.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching too far forwardPlace each foot beneath you rather than stretching your leg out against the current.
  • Drifting backwardAsk the operator to reduce the flow rather than sprinting to keep up.
  • Exaggerated high kneesUse a compact running motion instead of pulling your knees toward your chest.

Safety

Strong flow or fatigue can make you lose your footing and push you into the pool wall or underwater. Slippery footing increases the chance of a fall.

  • Use a supervised pool with a purpose-built jet and an operator who can stop the flow immediately.
  • Choose a running position within reach of a designated support, respecting the facility's clearance rules for outlets and intakes.
  • Agree on a stop signal before starting.
  • Increase flow only after you can complete an interval with controlled foot placement.

If you are not confident in water or have balance problems, choose supervised pool walking without a current first.
