Band External Rotation
Band External Rotation trains the small muscles that stabilize your shoulder by rotating your upper arm outward against light resistance while your elbow stays at your side.
- Beginner
- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Secure the band to a stable anchor at elbow height.
- Stand sideways to the anchor with your working arm farther from it.
- Grasp the band with your working hand.
- Position your elbow against your side, bent 90 degrees, with your forearm across your abdomen.
- Step away from the anchor until the band has light tension.
- Rotate your forearm outward around your stationary elbow through a comfortable range.
- Return your forearm to the starting position.
Form cues
- Keep your wrist straight.
- Keep your shoulder away from your ear.
- Use a relaxed grip.
Common mistakes
- Elbow drifting awayHold a small folded towel gently between your elbow and ribs to keep your upper arm in place.
- Turning your torsoKeep your chest facing forward so the movement comes from your shoulder rather than your trunk.
- Snapping backTake about two seconds to return, resisting the band's pull.
Safety
Excessive band tension or forcing the outward range can irritate your shoulder. A damaged band or loose anchor can release suddenly and strike you.
- Inspect the band for cracks or tears before each use.
- Test the anchor with a gentle pull before starting.
- Choose a light band that lets you complete every rep without straining.
- End the set if you feel shoulder pain or lose control of the movement.
If you have a recent shoulder injury, surgery, or a history of dislocation, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before adding resistance.
