How to do it

  1. Face the mitt holder with your feet about shoulder-width apart, your preferred side behind you.
  2. Raise your gloves beside your cheeks with your elbows near your ribs.
  3. Deliver the called punch to the presented mitt.
  4. Return your punching hand to your guard after contact.
  5. Follow the holder's movement with short steps that preserve your stance.
  6. Perform the agreed defensive movement when cued.
  7. Continue responding to presented targets for the round.
  8. Stop punching at the end signal in a balanced stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your wrist straight at impact.
  • Exhale briefly with each punch.
  • Let your hips turn with punches.
  • Keep your chin tucked.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching for distant mittsMove into range before punching rather than leaning beyond your front foot.
  • Chasing powerUse light, controlled contact until your accuracy matches the holder's pace.
  • Locking the elbowMeet the target before your elbow reaches full extension.
  • Watching the floorKeep your gaze around the holder's upper chest so you can see both targets.

Safety

Off-center contact or poorly timed targets can strain your wrist, hand, or shoulder. Missed punches can also strike the holder, especially when fatigue reduces control.

  • Use secure hand wraps and properly fitted boxing gloves.
  • Work with an experienced mitt holder; agree on combinations, contact intensity, and a stop signal before starting.
  • Keep the floor clear of bags, loose equipment, and other people.
  • Pause the round after missed calls or unstable target placement, or when fatigue disrupts your technique.

If you have hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, choose pain-free non-contact practice and seek advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before resuming impact work.
