How to do it

  1. Set the cable pulley at elbow height.
  2. Stand sideways to the machine with your working arm farther from the pulley.
  3. Grasp the handle with your working hand.
  4. Step away until the cable is taut.
  5. Position your forearm across your abdomen with your elbow bent 90 degrees against your side.
  6. Rotate your upper arm outward, moving the handle away from your abdomen while keeping your elbow in place.
  7. Return the handle slowly to the starting position.

Form cues

  • Keep your wrist straight.
  • Let your shoulder stay relaxed.
  • Breathe out as you rotate outward.

Common mistakes

  • Turning your whole bodyKeep your chest and hips facing forward so the movement comes from your shoulder.
  • Forcing extra rangeEnd the outward movement where your upper arm can still rotate without your shoulder rolling backward.
  • Squeezing your elbow into your ribsUse gentle contact with your side rather than clamping your arm down.

Safety

Excessive resistance or jerking the handle can irritate the shoulder tendons. The small rotating muscles can fatigue before you expect.

  • Start with the lightest cable setting you can control smoothly.
  • End the set when you can no longer control the return.
  • Stop if you feel sharp pain or pinching in your shoulder.

If you have ongoing shoulder pain, a history of dislocation, or recent shoulder surgery, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before adding resistance.
