How to do it

  1. Lie on your back on the Cadillac mat facing the push-through bar.
  2. Place the balls of both feet hip-width apart against the bar.
  3. Extend your legs toward the bar with your knees slightly soft.
  4. Begin with your ankles gently pointed against the bar.
  5. Flex your ankles to bring the tops of your feet toward your shins while maintaining forefoot contact.
  6. Return your ankles to the gently pointed position with a controlled movement.

Form cues

  • Keep your pelvis heavy.
  • Let your toes stay long.
  • Keep pressure even across both feet.
  • Breathe freely throughout.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees with each repetitionKeep the knee angle unchanged so the movement comes from your ankles.
  • Rolling onto the outer feetKeep your ankles aligned with your lower legs rather than letting them tip outward.
  • Forcing a larger stretchUse only the ankle range you can reach without straining or changing your body position.

Safety

If your feet slip, the spring-loaded push-through bar can recoil toward your head or torso and cause serious injury. Excessive resistance or forced ankle range can also strain the calf or Achilles tendon.

  • Have a qualified Pilates professional set the springs, bar travel, and your position, and supervise this exercise.
  • Use the manufacturer's required safety strap or chain for a bottom-sprung push-through bar.
  • Check that spring clips are closed and the bar's contact surface is dry before starting.
  • Have the bar secured before placing or removing your feet; never release it while it remains under spring tension.

If you have current Achilles, calf, or ankle pain, choose an unloaded ankle movement and seek guidance from a physiotherapist before using the sprung bar.
