Coach Mitt Counter Work
Coach Mitt Counter Work is a timed boxing drill that pairs non-contact defensive cues with punches to padded targets. It develops defensive timing, counterpunch coordination, and conditioning.
- Intermediate
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Stand facing the mitt holder in a staggered boxing stance, with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
- Raise your gloves beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
- Move your head off the path of the agreed simulated punch from the mitt holder.
- Throw the agreed counterpunch into the presented mitt target.
- Return your punching hand to your guard.
- Repeat the defensive response and counterpunch sequence for the allotted time.
- Lower your hands once the mitt holder has stopped presenting cues.
Form cues
- Keep your eyes on the holder.
- Stay centered between your feet.
- Keep your wrist straight at impact.
- Exhale briefly with each punch.
Common mistakes
- Exaggerated defensive movementMove only far enough to clear the cue so you remain ready to counter.
- Reaching for the targetAdjust your distance between exchanges so you can land without leaning or locking your elbow.
- Punching before the target appearsWait for a clearly presented mitt rather than guessing where to strike.
Safety
Mistimed cues can cause accidental face contact. Hard punches with poor wrist alignment or deteriorating control can strain your hands, wrists, or shoulders.
- Work with an experienced mitt holder who keeps every simulated return strike short of contact.
- Secure your hand wraps and gloves, and check the mitts for damage before starting.
- Agree on one defensive cue, one counterpunch, and a stop signal before increasing variety.
- Begin at slow speed with light impact; end the round when fatigue disrupts your control.
If you have current hand, wrist, shoulder, or neck pain, choose pain-free non-impact practice and seek advice from a physiotherapist before punching targets.
