Freestyle
Freestyle, also called front crawl, is a swimming stroke that combines alternating arm pulls with a flutter kick. It trains whole-body endurance and coordinated breathing.
- Intermediate
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Push off the wall face down with your arms extended overhead.
- Start small, alternating flutter kicks from your hips.
- Reach one hand into the water in line with its shoulder.
- Bend that elbow to angle your forearm toward the pool bottom.
- Press the water backward toward your feet until your hand reaches your hip.
- Lift that arm forward over the water with a relaxed elbow.
- Repeat alternating arm strokes for your chosen distance.
- Touch the wall with one hand to finish.
Form cues
- Exhale underwater; inhale as you turn sideways.
- Roll your shoulders and hips together.
- Keep your neck long, eyes down.
Common mistakes
- Lifting your head to breatheKeep your lower goggle underwater as your mouth clears the surface.
- Crossing your hands over the centerlineImagine two parallel rails extending forward from your shoulders, with each hand following its own rail.
- Bicycle-style kickingKeep your knees soft rather than driving them forward toward your chest.
- Slapping the water on entryLet your fingertips enter first with a quiet splash.
Safety
Fatigue or poorly coordinated breathing can cause you to inhale water or struggle to stay afloat. Forceful pulling with poor alignment can irritate your shoulders.
- Use a lifeguarded pool with a lane appropriate to your swimming speed.
- Check the lane direction and leave space behind the swimmer ahead.
- Choose distances you can finish comfortably without gasping.
- Stop at the nearest wall if your stroke breaks down or you develop pain; signal for help if you cannot reach it safely.
If you cannot comfortably float or recover to standing in shallow water, take supervised swimming instruction before attempting continuous lengths.
