Swimming
Freestyle with Fins
Freestyle with fins uses alternating arm strokes and a flutter kick to practice body position and swimming rhythm. The fins add propulsion while you train full-body endurance.

- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Fit the fins onto your feet while seated at the pool edge with your feet in the water.
- Push off the wall face down with your arms extended overhead.
- Start a small, continuous flutter kick from your hips.
- Reach one hand into the water in line with its shoulder.
- Press the water backward toward your hip with that hand and forearm.
- Recover that arm over the water with a relaxed, bent elbow.
- Alternate arm strokes over your target distance.
- Finish with a controlled hand touch on the wall.
Form cues
- Exhale steadily into the water.
- Roll your shoulders and hips together.
- Keep your ankles loose.
- Let the fins help; don't rush.
Common mistakes
- Pedaling from the kneesKeep your knees softly bent rather than driving them forward beneath your body.
- Crossing the centerlinePicture separate tracks ahead of your shoulders for each hand entry.
- Lifting your head to breatheTurn your face sideways with your body roll to inhale, keeping one goggle in the water.
Safety
Forceful kicking against the fins can strain your ankles or calves, especially as fatigue builds. Added speed increases collision risk, and exhaustion in the water can lead to drowning.
- Use fins only if you can already swim independently, in a lifeguarded pool.
- Choose snug fins that do not pinch or rub.
- Keep enough space from other swimmers to account for your extra speed and fin length.
- End the interval if your stroke becomes uncontrolled; stop swimming for pain, cramping, or unusual breathlessness.
If you have ongoing ankle, calf, or shoulder pain, ask a physiotherapist or doctor whether fin swimming is appropriate before starting.
