How to do it

  1. Secure the paddles to your hands according to their strap design.
  2. Push off the wall into a face-down glide.
  3. Reach one hand into the water ahead of its shoulder, fingertips first.
  4. Bend that elbow so your fingertips angle downward while your elbow stays closer to the surface.
  5. Press water backward toward your hip with your palm and forearm.
  6. Lift that arm out of the water into a relaxed recovery toward the next entry.
  7. Alternate arms with a steady flutter kick for your chosen distance.
  8. Finish at the wall with a controlled touch.

Form cues

  • Rotate your hips and shoulders together
  • Exhale underwater; turn sideways to inhale
  • Keep your neck long

Common mistakes

  • Bending your wrist against the paddleKeep your wrist aligned with your forearm rather than curling your hand to pull.
  • Lifting your head to breatheRoll your face sideways with your body, keeping one goggle in the water.
  • Forcing an extra-long reachBegin the pull before reaching farther makes your shoulder shrug toward your ear.

Safety

Paddles increase resistance at the shoulder, so oversized paddles or forceful pulls under fatigue can strain it. Fatigue can also compromise breathing and water safety.

  • Choose paddles only slightly larger than your hands, with straps that do not restrict circulation.
  • Swim in a lifeguarded pool with a clear lane.
  • Warm up with regular freestyle before adding short paddle intervals.
  • Remove the paddles if shoulder pain appears or you can no longer maintain a controlled stroke.

Use regular freestyle if you cannot yet swim it comfortably; seek advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before using paddles with ongoing shoulder pain or a recent shoulder injury.
